Peter, these sessions are ongoing. We will do more bass sessions and will most likely have a Bass Sessions CD as well.
It could very well be that we could also do sessions with pres that only have DI's - and use them. Pres w/ no DI would not be included. This is a possibility - and it's also why we appreciate feedback. So far the bass sessions have been the most challenging to do. Dan Richards Digital Pro Sound The Listening Sessions |

Peakae,
We have included in our plans for future sessions, the DI / pre session which will be conducted just for that. We will track the www.lakland.com bass through a variety of DI's and pres that have hi z inputs. Useing the pres as direct boxes. I'm not sure when we will conduct that session but be sure to stay tuned. Thanks for your comments and suggestions though, these sessions wouldn't be the same without input from everyone. Hey Dot,
Nice to see you outside the Planet... I was going to mention that although I absolutely love the Manley gear and think there may be none finer, it's the Langevin stuff that makes the most sense to me for this line-up. The price tag of my Langevin DVC was $1500.00. This bought me a stereo pair of some of the smoothest mic pres you've heard coupled with a nice selection of eq sweeps and glued together with a great stereo limiter. That's amazing bang-for-the-buck and versatility from the Manley/Langevin people and a nice fit for your experiment. I'd also put in a vote for a sample of one of the older MD1/2/3 GrooveTubes mics or the new Vipre mic pre? Love what you're doing - keep up the good work. Tor |

Hey, Torpass. I'll look into the DVC. I contacted Manley and they sent me the SLAM! What's a poor guy like me to do? : )
Vipre is on its way. -------------------------- Ha! Peter, then you must know Bamse og Kylling. |

Dan,
Make you a deal - I'll call you Dan if you call me Tor. Always gives me a chuckle when someone calls me by a username. Besides, I practically feel like I know you by now - it's been a couple years of username familiarity... lol I can't wait to hear the tests - I think you're going to need a whole file just for the Vipre though - when you hear all the things it can do. It's truly amazing. Can't wait to see how my DVC baby sounds in action. Go Langevin go!!! lol Tor |

I didn't like any of the pre's...
The one I thought was the lesser ugly was the A-Designs. Think Differente! |

Yo Yo Jeronimo,
I thought the MP-1 was the worst pre on that session. It was thuddy and the image was wobbly and blurry and just gave me negative vibes. The John Hardy M-1 was by far the punchiest tightest bass I've ever heard... All my opinion, maybe we were just looking for different qualities. I think the A-Designs pre sounds great on other sessions, and it was a stand-out in this one (in a negative way to me). But I would say all the pre's do a good job and I'm sure the A-Designs could be used on sources that need a rolling bottom. If you think all of them suck its because your not comparing them fairly. These bass tracks haven't been EQ'd or compressed yet and the test was more to see how the mic pre (NOT DI) handled the low frequencies. Thats what I listened for anyways.... and I tend to favor tight, round and clean bottoms with a thick, 3D feel to them. -Dusty |

Would the countyrman DI have much effect on the mic pres? I'm running a Warwick Corvette with active EMG's thru a Mackie 24/8 board with Digimax converters to compare my tracks to the sessions; and my tracks are definitely flat and lifeless. I'm assuming its the difference between a mackie board and an API or Great River. That's why I'm buying a mic pre. I just wondered if the countryman has anything to do with it. thanks

It's been almost three years since you posted that, and it still sounds just as stupid as it did when you wrote it. The MP1 may not be to your liking, but it's sound on ANY instrument or vocal is anything but "thuddy". It is crisp, clear, round, defined, and joyfully musical. I cannot sing it's praises loud enough. It brings a certain sparkle and presence to anything I throw at it. I absolutely love it. If I had nothing but a bunch of MP1's and A-Designs Pacifica's, I could get all my work done, and it would all sound great. You need a hearing check from your audiologist. |
