but these kinds of discussions, and the posting of reviews by people with tons of experience, or not (as is in my case) are still invaluable to many, especially home recordists.....

the whole idea that people with all different levels of recording setups, can come into forums and hear "good" advice and ideas, and not have to deal with too many pompous asses is the reason i come.

i'm sure there is some scientist sitting somewhere that has all the answers, and i don't really give a fuck about that particular individual...

i do care that someone at least had the time and impetus to bother posting something that's of interest to me, namely, the sounds of the lowly drum machine/sequencer through various mic pres.

i gotta tell you.....
i've been doing this a long time......

and i still don't know shit.

but i'm still so into it........

and if someone comes along with a bucket of cold water and tosses it, well, i may get wet, but i won't bow out.

it's silly to get into such deep technical brouha when we're really talking about something that's not that technical here.

i know, i like what i like.

i know i probably don't even know why i like it, other than it's pleasant to my ears.

whether it's as silly as levels being different, or the differences in q settings on the parametric, i really don't give a rats ass.

is anyone else with me on this one?!

Cooloh, wtf

the levels are a serious issue. dan is getting help from some very qualified (and important) people to resolve it.

and i applaud DOT for doing these comparisons, and i think they fill a need that has been there for a long time.

by all means, not trying to start sh*t here, just trying to say that even though they're not perfect, these listening sessions are totally worth the time and the "press"........

my preferred method of listening, is to download these, burn em to cdr, take em home, and pop em in the player through my monitors......

then i listen to one sample at a time, turning it up real loud, turning it down, and inbetween, and ultimately, the volume that the individual track comes out at becomes irrelevant.

in other words, i try to focus on the sound for what it is, and not necessarily a/b them back to back....

maybe this is a wrong approach?

in recording and mixing these comparisons, there are issues such as proximity (as well as proximity effect), loudness and pitch variation.

it's up to the listener to decide how to use. i have certain personal criteria. on this go round, i really like the rnp. i wouldn't want an entire project recorded with the rnp though.

Session 4 - Mics Preamps DI - Drum Machine has been completely rerecorded and is now online.

I decided to go back and record the entire session. There are a few new additions, such as the Manley SLAM! Much happier with this version.

Enjoy.

So, I'm a few years late, but recently have taken an interest in running synths and drum machines through preamps. Do you still have the original, dry recording, and would you please post a link to it? I'd like to hear the difference, if possible.

Thanks.

Yours,
Niall.
