After reading the electric guitar article and using the 45 degree technique you shared, we're happy with our guitar tones.

thank you.

are you using 2 mics, like pictured in his diagram?

ive been struggling latley trying to get a decent mic'ed tone from my amp. I used to use 2 mics (close mic'ed), but i still always got some sort of phasing...very minimal, but still noticable to my ears.

then i started to use just one mic, on a 45 degree angle....like pictured in BAMs audio course, but using a single mic. With that, my tones are REALLY bassy and boomy.

it seems i just cant get satisifed with any of my mic placements.

yes, i used the technique with 2 mics. each was on its own speaker at a 45 degree angle. I did have to reverse phase on one channel, and the world suddenly found its axis. i used 2 Sennheiser e835's. One was sent through a tube preamp and the other went straight to the Firepod.

I was very surprised at the results.

im gonna try the other tecnique, where he has one mic pointing straight, and the other mic angled, but the 2 are touching each other.

but im gonna try it, so the 2 mics are on differnt speakers...but positioned according to the photo.

i tried it, and it worked wonderfully! I had the one mic facing straight forward on a Greenback speaker, and the other mic (that should have been touching the other mic, but angled)...i had it on a V30 celestion, angled. Both mics were exactly as the photo showed, just on 2 differnt speakers.

it captured the tone perfectly! highs and lows were all there, with minimal phase issues.

i recorded a new song trying this technique. its at www.soundclick.com/bryank

the song is called "eternal love". the song first starts off mainly the guitar by itself, so you get a good feel of how the 2 mics captured the tone, and later in the middle of the song, more instruments are introduced, and the guitar sat reall well in the mix.

The other technique work wonders for me. The only thing I would change next time would be adding a room mic and NOT recording in a closet. It's going to work for this album we're doing, but the next one will be cooler with big room sounds mixed in.

your song sounds cool

thanks!

LOL, i record my amp in a closet too......i have the interior of the closet padded with carpet, to help 'deaden' the sound, and to cut back on bleeding and volume issues. That way....i can shut the closet door, and its a nice little amp recording room.
