Hey folks, What is the concensus about the use of har-bal in the mastering process? If you are not familiar with it. Here's the link:

Most I know call it "hair-ball" if that means anything.

It's a decent EQ though... It doesn't "match" any better than other "matching" EQ's (notice my outward use of quotation marks when I say "matching"). And as it's a stand-alone, it has a terrible work flow (IMO).

Decent sounding / nothing special.

YMMV.

I have to disagree somewhat on a few things. Har-bal has really come a long way since it early days.First off it was not intended for matching EQ, although it could do the job.The only way to get good results from matching is if both recordings were so close in the instruments used, and timbre. The author so notes this to those who ask.The software was mainly for Harmonic Balancing thus= Har-bal.There have been so many upgrades and improvements since its inception,I think anyone who really gave it a chance would wonder how they ever got along without it.Another thing is not only good support, but a willingness to help those who want to learn Mastering. There are a host of ways to use this software, which all have been noted on the Har-bal forum.I'm not saying its a "Say All Do All" Program, but just another tool in the box of tools.

This sounds really great. I really like the idea of being save money by mastering my records on my laptop instead of having to send it off to an experienced mastering engineer. How much is it and where can I buy it?

what we need here, is a mastering mix-OFF!

compare, and see, how much difference there is..
then, once and for all, it can be put to rest...

or not.

Wink

it's easy to say it sucks, or it's great...

ok.

i wanna hear it.

Here are my thoughts on it after playing with it quite a bit.

It's a pretty good EQ. It is pretty limited as a standalone mastering suite. You basically have an EQ with a built in limiter set to -.1dBFS.

The designer did not have the intent of using the app as a means to match a song's EQ to say, a commercial recording, per se. It might be a little dangerous in some hands as I think many people think of it that way.

I think for some it might be a better learning tool than an actual mastering tool. Perhaps with the visual cue, you'll be able to identify certain freq's that are consistently being over compensated for due to your mix listening environment. That's just an example of something you might find helpful.

It's not a bad program, but it's fairly limited as an all in one solution, as are others.

I used hair-ball once. It was decent at best. John's right about the work flow.
