Hi tonio, might not be tomorrow, but will definitely post something on the 4060 at some point.

It will be cool to see what you think of it. Its one of my favorite mics at any price. What I love about it is that when I use it I do not hear the mic. It sounds like what I stick it in front of.

I also have a keen interest in the 4060.

I am pretty happy with my 4047, and I think the 4033 is a classic. Quite interested to hear how the 4060 fits alongside these in a mic locker.

Any updates about the 4060? I'm interested in it, too.

The 4041 and 4047 are my two favorite mics...(well, the ADK TC is my fav for vocals.)

I have access to a 4060 and maybe I'll try it, here at home, next time I'm doing voc's.

I've heard mixed reviews on it but I've always loved AT stuff in the past and thought they were underrated at times.

There's a ton of 4050 on the album I'm working on.

I'm old enough to remember when Audio-Technica was generally thought to make cheap, low quality mics. When I bought one of the early-run 4033 I was just blown away....

You know...I used a 4060 a while back, since this was bumped.

It's fine. Didn't blow me away. More flattering than true. Liked it better on acoustic guitar than my voice, FWIW.

Lack of a HPF kinda sucks, because it has a BIG bottom.

Update...the tracks I laid with the 4060 have aged well. Meaning everytime I go back and listen, I end up liking them more and more.

I just borrowed a Soundelux U95s...nice mic, but it didn't blow me away either. Perfectly good. Nothing that made me cream myself. I thought, "That's exactly what I thought of the 4060..." So, I pulled out the tracks and compared them directly. I could literally (after normalizing) switch mid phrase between the 4060 and U95s tracks and couldn't tell when I switched. They're that similar sounding. And actually, the 4060 sounded a tad nicer-more extended in either frequency direction.

So, I might just have to have one or two of these things. I've seen them go used for $650...the Soundelux goes for $1900 or so used. I really like AT's 40 series. Good mics. I've not been too into any of the lesser lines...

Another similarlity? The shock mount for both suck. Wink

More updates. The "big bottom"? You can thank the Great River pre for that. Through the Millenia, it's much less overpowering and has a nice air that wasn't there with the NV.

Thus far, the only mics I've liked better...have costed three and four times as much money--and even then, it's subtle...Korby67, U67(2 of them that actually sounded pretty different), and the Innertube87...$3500-$4500. It's closer to the 67s...the Innertube differs from those in that it seems to have a very "softening" effect the others don't.

I'm trying to wrangle a friend of a friend's 4060 that's had a NOS Telefunken put into it for testing. He says it keeps the character of the mic, but makes it richer and the highs a tad sweeter. If an $80 tube takes it up a notch...well, I think it's gonna be hard to beat for me.

I'll tell you big thing I like...it's so articulate. Every little nuance of the midrange is there. It definately lacks a certain soft/vintage flavor the others mentioned bring

Just wanted to bump this to tell you the updated observations.

cool. I haven't tried one but lately been using the 4047 a lot for things. I tricks me sometimes thinking I don't like it but sits in the track nicely. It's sort of like I want to EQ something about it but can't really find what that something is. I think the 4047 would mate well with a tube preamp, so perhaps the 4060 has more of that something. I've yet to try the 4047 with the Robbie.

that's my second favorite song of all time...everything else is tied for first though.

IMO...the 4047 sounds more like a solid state u67...4060 more like an u87--and not tubey at all.

You want to hear what I don't like about it, Middle? It can get strident in the upper mids pretty easy (price of articulation, I guess)...and it's low end, while ample is...well, it seems to have a hole in it. The low mids seem absent...or maybe it's that they're not sexy? Anyway, where it's big, I often pull lows out...and it can get more shrill when you do that.

If you're buying, buy used. The 4047 is probably more of an "all around" mic...the 4060 is clearly a vocal mic with a foward mid peak.

I've had a 4060 for a couple years. The character of the mic is definitely susceptible to the tube installed. The original tube was a bit dull and lifeless, while the JAN series Sylvania that I installed really brought the mic to life. Very nice wide open sound that's good for vocals, acoustic guitar, etc. It has a pretty wide cardioid pattern to it, so keep that in mind.

Well, I wound up with one here...it was like the others I'd used but...better. Pull it apart--Mullard ECC88. Foward without being strident. Full without ever being muddy.

There's something I still miss directly comparing it to tube Neumanns, but...but, at the same time, the comparison makes me wish they had a tad more articulation.

Definately also works best with the LA610. The tube pre softens the sound a bit like the old 67/M269/Tube87s already are.

There's this myth with some people that you can't use a tube mic --> tube pre. It's ridiculous actually. So, to answer your question, it really isn't the question these days Wink

Think of all those great recordings going Tube mic (U47 for eg) > Tube console (pre) Tube Compressor > tape...It's silly.

Run with your GR though. I've used one on vocals for a couple occasions, with Tube, FET and dynamic mics and it's outstanding.
