this is a new version of 'the travel song'.

changes:
brand new bass track.
5 new guitar tracks, features Palmer PDI-09 Junction specialized guitar DI box for capturing all guitars.
no mics.
mixed from scratch, new master.

this has been a great experiment, hope you enjoy it.
if anyone wants to know about the palmer, i'd be happy to talk about it.

the Travel Song

as we journey, into the great tomorrow
we will see, all around us, all around us
all the people, who have come from so far away
and they look weary, and they look weary
we will smile, and offer our friendship,
offer our sanity, offer serinity.

they turn to look for the tangible,
look as they will, they cannot find
the crucible of their devotion,
look here and there, come what may
all they see is apathy
in the faces of everyone else
then a man, with lights in his eyes,
shows them the way, and then explains,
he understands.

everywhere that i go, everywhere that i see,
everywhere that i know, everywhere, that is me.

journey to everywhere,
journey to everywhere,
you are here, you are there, you are there.

following light, following light.

I, travel with you now,
following light, giving me sight
stand steady as a stone,
directing me, calm as the sea.

following light.

Do you want review of the mix, or the song itself?

this is a song that has been posted before...

but then, as i described in the thread, i bought a new device for recording guitars.

this song, was the 'beta' test for the new device (see title)

i assumed, this being a recording-heavy board, that there would be much more interest, in a device that removes microphones from the chain...

but, hey, whatchagonnado?
LOL
Wink

i just put it out there, and if anyone can glean some good info from it, and figure things out they wanted to know about, then it's good.

the song, is the song.

the mix, is the mix.

but the way it was recorded, was quite different than the norm.

especially for me, a tube-amp-snob-old-school-throw the mic in front of it-dyed in the wool-etcetcetc...

Ok , just a little confusing, I agree it's a mix forum.I think it's a good idea to post, until you posted the lyrics, then I start to think it's spam. Maybe if you're posting lyrics, put them in songwriting? Just a thought.

Your stuff is always top notch gonzo,as far mix goes. Never anything wrong with it and I assume you know that. Maybe you could share some of your talent and knowledge to some of the other posts with the people who really need it. Tell us in the post what you used for plug-ins etc on the palmer, listen to other mixes and give advice. I'm sure a lot of people would like to get advice from you, be a pal and take the time to contribute. Maybe being a bit hypocritical here, haven't contributed this forum much, but have to others lots.
Hope I'm not being rude here, really like your stuff, just like to hear other stuff as well.

Mike

Rob, can you put up some photos of the iso box, and how you got the palmer set up too??? 4 Ohm or 8 Ohm??? And some MKIIB Boogie porn Big Laugh
I might want to try something like that.

I'm not getting the the smooth lead out of my boogie like you get. If you don't mind sharing I'm really interested.

Thanks
Jeff

Rob, I listened to this awhile back but honestly can't remember which version it was I listened to - ie the one posted pre /post Palmer. I have however just listened to this version in this post, and like most of the stuff I hear from you, it's top shelf playing and tone. I think for the DIY'rs out there, you're a fine example showing that tone (no matter how you record it) starts from the player out: Player, instrument, engineer, mic, pre, coverters, medium. In my book, no matter you slice it, it will ALWAYS be in that order, so at the end of the day, while the gear is obviously a "big deal" you've proved for years that it all starts with the talent and while some guys like Kel have touched on this fairly recently, it does seem to escape some peeps. So good on you and the way you continue to record, ill regardless whether or not you have an API, Pacifica or Wunder to track your guitars thru Wink

Now having said all this, I will add a bit of an observation and comment on this:

Honestly, I think part of the problem is that you do tend to respawn a lot of old tunes. Please don't take this the wrong way, but for myself personally, it's hard for me to comment on a "remix" of a song (not talking about this one), especially when I already have the "CD version" of it on the disc that I bought from you sometime back Wink Again, please don't take offense to this. I prolly wouldn't have even bothered commenting at all, if not for the few xmas party bev's I've had tonight Smile but decided to stop in on the forum and just caught this thread.

As for inactivity in this forum, I hear ya and overall, it's bleak - maybe even less active than the vsp mp3 forum, but maybe not. I don't go there enough to really know..But I will say, that it appears it's like most forums, where's it's "i'll listen to yours if you listen to mine." ....I have to say that I can't recall the last time you commented on anything posted in here, yet due post up a hefty dose of your own stuff, and will often post veiled frustration with the fact that that w/e you post is rec'd with little response..

This is a natural frustration, and I've found myself in the same boat, so can relate. for eg, quite sometime back, I posted some eg's of a song I did, where I had the nylon guitar and vocal processed thru arguably the hottest new h/w reverb on the market, the Bricasti M7. As the majority of the few that have had a chance to use this unit know, (this was one of the first 3 sold) slays pretty much every other h/w reverb unit out there right now - opinions based on a few people taking time to A/B it against the other players...So I post these samples on this "recording forum" as I figure, "cool, this is pretty hip and not many peeps gettin a chance to hear what all the hub bub is about." After 38 or so "views" you think anyone takes the time to comment? LOL...nope..nada..After that, I just nuked the link and have decided that posting up samples / songs etc is (overall) a waste of time as far as I'm concerned and will refrain from it in the future.I have loads of stuff on the go, but will no longer waste time cutting mp3's and uploading. If I need a 2nd or 3rd,opinion, I simply side-bar a few ears who I respect, as often, I read comments that can steer the OP off tack, so no longer venture on that slippery slope.

For the most part, I've resigned myself to lurking here now and then. there's one particular poster on this board that is just a complete asshat in my book. Talks the big game but never seems to deliver the goods to give cred to his staunch, blunt opinions. I just can't handle reading his crap anymore, so don't enjoy this place as much as I used to.

Anyways, I digress lol..(stupid booze)In a nutshell, I'll always listen to anything new you have if I get the chance,as I've always appreciated your talents - even if I haven't liked all the tunes you've posted. I will however say, that just once, I'd love to hear something a little more raw from you. Something w/o loads of guitar layers and with a single, drier, less processed vocal track..You have more than enough talent to pull this off, and it would be cool to hear....

kudos and keep on rockin' it up.

that's cool man....
i'll give a listen to your thingy.....

dutchman-
aha!
a taker.....

HEHE

really, the only reason i thought i'd post this, was to see if there was any interest in this kind of recording technique.
apparently, it isn't very popular or used that often, or, people are very quiet about it... which is what i think i'm going to be, from now on.

the shots of the iso cab?
well, it's just a plain old demeter iso cab (you can see pics on his website) that i pulled all the insulation out of, and put my own auralex-style foam inside it instead.
it's got a celestion vintage 30 in it, it's a 8 ohm speaker.
i have 8 and 4 ohm outputs on my boogie, and IT DOES NOT CARE what load i apply to it.
i change the outputs at will, and regularly run unbalanced outputs/ohmages on the head.

i'll try to dig up some pics, and post in a bit........

Bazz-
thanks for the review.
if you listened to this a while back, you listened to the original version, that i remixed on Sonar (after ripping the roland backup files into wavs)
this newer version, is all about the palmer.

now, a little confusion here.... my album Trouble, didn't have this song on it.
if you have this one on cd, then maybe i mailed you a cd?
i don't remember, sorry...
(tnx for buying the cd !)

well, i'm glad you lurk anyway, you've been around a long time, and have always supported my efforts, and given good advice...

and thanks to you, bazz, i spent my precious time off during the xmas holiday Wink writing and recording a brand new song, using the new Palmer and Weber combination, and running my boogie at full tilt for the first time in several years, and the first time since i had it completely tuned up.

i think you'll like it, the tones are more modern sounding, definitely different than my previous tones, and as soon as i get it fully mixed, i'll post it.

yes, a new tune.

Wink
