All,
So on a hope to help out as many as I can on this forum, here is my Journal page. Starting today 8/17/2006. This is a new beginning for me. A day after I filed for divorce of a year + separation and a bad situation. Long story there and no need to get into details, but this is a new beginning for me and the studio.

A little about me: I am 31 years old. I was military for a few years working special forces and intelligence. Yada yada. The Studio is my escape from what I refer to as "Defense Hell." I will speak my mind, but also restrain myself from any political view points when necessary. Just not my thing.

I started playing guitar when I was 9 and loved it. Started playing clubs at 14 around the Cleveland, Ohio area. Had the grand opportunity to open for acts like Tool, The Might Mighty Bosstones, Wax, Bash and Pop (tommy Stensen - The Ralacements), Murphy's Law, and a few other big acts. Really had a blast and was always on the other side of the glass for studio stuff. Went to school for graphics and 3D animation and then hit the Air Force for a bit. Now here in D.C. Opened the studio a few years back as a hobby/cheap place to record, but then it took off. Have made some good connections and gotten some airplay for some of my clients. Always a cool thing to hear your work on the radio. Still trying to learn all I can as I am self taught for my rig. Started Pro Tools at 5.x and have grown from there. Feel that I have a pretty good handle on it. The studio runs at night and I have an intern that takes on projects that I do not want or cannot work on. I really like to spend time with the band and "produce" them as much as I can. Some good, some bad, all try to do well. My thinking was to not have crap released from the studio, but I realized that some interpret what others love and vis-a-versa. All and all the studio is great and I really enjoy all the time and effort that has gone into it.

You can catch alot of my work on my myspace page below. All MP3's are at 320kps for a little better quality. I know, MP3 right, but it works for promotion. I prefer acoustic rock, but love that harder edged sound too.

I will put up all I can for my stuff. Here is what I work with now.

It is a small 2+ room studio. I however have a 3 story house that I can move into whatever room if needed and they are all pretty much treated in some shape or form.

Enjoy and I am happy to be here.

wow, fabulous looking space there IntelDoc.

Are they acoustic panels in front of the mixing position on the floor?

May I ask what the name of your band was?

Tube,
Thanks! Those are traps on the floor that I originally made. Just tightens up the space a tad. Really helps to be honest with the standing waves. My sub is to the right so it helps that as well. plus it hides all the wires! Smile

Contrast,
My band in Cleveland was stupidly called "A Lesser Squid." We used to play Flash's all the time and a few other spots. Just a young 18 year old at the time but it was fun. Also played in a band called "The Others" before the Squid days. Played Peabody's and some college's. Had a great time with that one.

I posted this up on the MMMMmmmmm section but will copy it here as this is definitely a entry to my new journal.

So this is a rough up of the song "Dirty Deed's" with drums. I downloaded the Waves SSL bundle to test and so far I really like it. The Buss compressor just adds some nice punch. Still want that Alan Smart C2 sitting in my rack, but that will come soon. The vocals and guitar were tracked rough to just hear it. Tracked on that GT fet55 mic into the Trident 80B in a small hallway. (You can hear it as I have not really traeted it. It is a hallway.) Really limited treatment that I usually put amps in. Drums were a new and amazing Maryland Drums 4 piece. Really nice kit! Will post picks soon.

Here ya go. Bass will be soon once I really edit the drums and such.

Dirty Deed's with Drums

Since this tune means a lot to me as it was written by a 20 year old client and good friend about my terrible divorce, I am going to really beat this song to death. Just a great vibe and a great piece. Really hits home.

Enjoy!

Well, some good news! A young "dischord" like band that I recorded in the beginning of Summer got signed to Ruffian Records. I guess they will be putting out the 4 song EP that I recorded for them to the label. A good step for my small, fetile studio. They recorded a track for free recently at Inner Ear Studios in D.C. NOt the cleanest of recordings, but hey, it was free right.

Here is their blog post they did on MySpace:

Well, some may be wondering why all the songs have been taken down and replaced. Our EP is being released on Ruffian records, a small pressing, but a release nonetheless and so it will be on sale ( cheap, like 5 bucks). All the songs that were on the site before are on the "Channels" EP which some of us want to change the name of. Whatever the name is however, the track listing is... 1.) Yellow Journalism 2.) Hold That Thought 3.) Red Channel 4.) Mannequins So yeah. That is exciting. We we'll be among the likes of Sentai, Horses, Turn Pale, La Mi Vida Violenta, Hand-Fed Babies, Equinox and Black Eyes. Ruffian Rydaz. Also, as of right now "The Most Delicate Picture" is streaming on our myspace. This song was recorded at Inner Ear Studios at the beginning of August. However, it's unmastered so it's basically a draft of the song. It was recorded as a part of the D.C. Free Recording Project spear-headed by Ruffian Hugh McElroy (Hand-Fed Babies, Sentai, Equinox, Black Eyes). A huge thanks to Hugh for helping us out. So, thank you all for reading this. Wish Joe good luck in Richmond ( VCU ). We're staying together, don't worry. Come out to some shows! And come talk to us, we love all of you guys so much for your support. Oh, and we're going to make some shirts probably. Thank you all very much, Keith, Omar, Danny, Joe ( bird noises )

RUFFIAN RECORDS:
http://www.ruffianrecords.com/Index2.html

So this is great news for the front of TBR STUDIO. I just hope that they will at least put my name to the record seeing that I mixed it, mastered it and pretty much made it sound decent. This drummers kit was shit and I replaced EVERYTHING on it. Toms, kick, snare. Insane. Great guys though and had a blast working with them. You can hear all their stuff on my player on MySpace under : POLYNATION

Anyways cool news at last.

Thanks!

If you haven't poked around Jacl Daniels' Journal, you might consider it...he put together an SSL buss comp for ridiculously little coin...it very well might be worth your time.

I'm utterly baffled at the general opinion regarding smoking. I don't smoke, but it's a bar, for God's sake. That's what your supposed to expect. It's a den of iniquity where people are going to indulge in all of the minor vices and sins denied to them during their mundane workdays. You can wreck your liver, ruin your hearing, get into a fight, and pick up an STD, but somehow smoking is unacceptable? Sheesh. We've turned into a nation of entitled whiners.

Some NEWS Updates:

1. baba G' Nush's new stuff will be going into rotation with DC101's local licks radio show. This is a huge step for these guys and a great promotional step for them and the recording studio. Helps get the name out better. Looking forward to hearing the new stuff over the airwaves.

2. HAve 2 new bands in for recording this Sept. Both from out of the local area, so the name is getting around at least. 1 Hardcore band from Roanoke, the other from outside the city.

Looking forward to getting some new gear too. Alan Smart C2, and may make a big jump and go HD with Apogee frontend. Still looking, but it has been in the plans for awhile.

Later,

So the past few weeks have been busy. Tracked "Bring On the Sun" with a tight budget, but they got two good tunes done. Not bad for young kids. Cehck it out on my myspace player when ya get a chance.

Starting a hardcore band from Southern VA tomorrow. Should be pretty sweet!

Also, BIG NEWS, but I will be doing a live recording for the Alex Skolnick Trio. Yes, the Alex Skolnick from testament. My good friend manages their website and we have all hung out some before. When they heard that I had a studio they were fired up for a recording, so I am going to record their live show this week. Hopefully it will be a decnt quailty as they want to use it potentially as a bootlegged material cd. I plan on pulling signals off the board into my 002R and then running a pair of TLM-103's or AKG 414's into my API 3124 for a live room mic setup. Then mix from there.

Thoughts?

Pretty happy about this one!

So I was able to successfully record the "Alex Skolnick Trio" last night and man is gonna be sweet. Ended up using a 002R, a digimax LT and inserted my API into that to get 2 really good channels. Then I tied off the board to get a line feed. The room mics I ended up using were the RODE NTK's that I have, so those into the API was pretty much perfect. Lots of clean rooms tones and the direct feeds really rounded out the mix. They were fired up with how good it sounded not even mixed! Cannot wait to mix this and get it to them. All new material too.

It was pretty damn fun and a small club so it was even better to be able to do it.

So I tracked a live show of the Alex Skolnick Trio a few weeks ago and it turned out fantastic. Having fun with the guys, I decided to make CD graphics and do it up for them. since I bought a Lightscribe player it looks pretty cool ,minus the lack of color, but still very sweet looking. The graphics are here, so image the CD graphis in lightscribe.

They should be happy with it. Got to keep up on my graphics background too. Smile

Hope to be able to post it eventually, but no can do right now.

So Abe Quigley stopped in this weekend for a 3 day stay. It was a good break from his national (self funded ) tour and we got to start tracking the new stuff for his upcoming "C" record. The stuff sounds great. Very organic and raw. Nothing very scripted per say, but just takes and different ideas. There is a rough quick mixed version of KID that we did for fun. It is a favorite of mine from his "B" record so we tracked it. Check it out on my MySpace page. He can be found at:

www.myspace.com/abequigleymusic. It was a great time and just good fun all around.

PROJECTS:
1. Finished up the mixing of KNUCKLEPUCKS new 5 song EP. I think that it turned out great and we are sending it off to Nathan James at Jigsaw Sound up in New York to master. The guys in the band are pretty fired up and the mastering should really work some magic on the CD. Should be sounding HUGE when it is all done.

2. BABA G' NUSH will be in this Sunday to finish up their long awaited 5 song EP. We will have that to Nathan as well for his final touches. This EP is pretty funky and the band has really worked on it hard to get it where it is now. Pretty happy with this one and both of these projects.

Lots of new stuff this month and new bands. Pretty booked and should make for a good year end to the studio.

BIG NEWS: Looks like that I will be moving out to the Denver area with my company. Don't worry, the studio will go too. Planning on building a nice setup out there in a HOUSE instead of a townhouse and really design it to have a soundroom, live room, drums room and booth. Will go HD as well. It will be a good turn to a bad past 2 years.

Stay tuned!

Smile anytime man. Will keep you all posted. More than likely I will mix stuff freelance until the studio is built. That will be my main focus though when I get out there. New Work and the new studio. Already started to market out there too.

Nice space and interesting read! Thanks for sharing. Smile

We're going to send 5 songs to get mastered by Nathan James. I read that you were very pleased with the results from the BABA G' NUSH EP.

All,
So it has obviously been a long time since I have given any updates, so here it goes....

Livin in Denver now, still working the day job, but mixing freelance at night. Working on a Indie release now for a band called ANNEX. You can check them out on my studio page that will link you to MySpace until I build a new page. Pretty straight forward ROCK, and so far so good. I am pumped though as I sold my house back east finally and made a MAJOR upgrade, paidd off all bills and aam now on a new beginning. Just a good time. The MAJOR upgade for the mix room now consists of some serious hardware...

1. HD 3 Accel
2. API Summing
a. 2 x API 8200 line mixers
b. 1 x API 2500 Bus Compressor
c. 1 x API 7800 Master Module
3. Digi 192
4. Apogee D/A 16X (stems out to API gear)
5. 2 x Apogee Rosetta 800's
6. Antelope Isochrne OCX atomic Clock (Holy SHIT!)
7. All wired with new Mogami cables (Dsub, etc)

Analog gear that is hard wired and fully normalled is into a new Audio Solutions 96TT bay. All outs go to top row, then to INs of gear, etc. Slick system. Analog Gear is:

1. Ensoniq DP/4
2. Eventide H3000 D/SE
3. Lexicon PCM-90
4. Digitech TSR-24S (cool effects)
5. Digitech DSP-55 harmonizer
6. Filter Factory
7. Sansamp (killer on snare)
8. 2 x Distressors
9. 2 x 1176's
10. 2 x DBX 160A's
11. 2 x Vintech X73i's (for EQ points)
12. 2 x Trident 80B's (more EQ)

So that is the system. I also picked up a Control 24 for fader ability. Just a big mouse, but it looks sweet. I will try to get pic up soon.

Really fired up and glad to have this system.

Best, and more to come....
