I just finished a new desk for my computer. If you have a circular saw, hammer, a couple of nails, wood glue and some paint, it is pretty easy to fabricate a custom desk for yourself in an afternoon. I have built a 16 space rack with casters, console desk, computer desk, and a couple of little peices to add to the top of them to hold little preamps and the like. You can see a couple of pics of them at www.myspace.com/browndogsstudioI would definately suggest giving this a try. There is no cheaper way to gain the space for your toys.

How embarrassing--I forgot that I'd posted anything and never came back to check! Believe it or not--and you will believe it--my wife tried to talk me into getting rid of the catcus. It's still here. That setup is my temporary studio down in Mexico. I'd never use the Boss monitors to do any serious work, but they're fine for roughing up demos and giving my ears a rest (I use my Sennheiser HD580s most of the time in this studio.

even funnier...I just got a Jerker for the new G5 we had to put in for an upcoming project...and I'd seen this thread quite a while ago and had basically forgotten about it...but the Jerker desk is a very nice little piece...once I figure out how to weasel some rack rails between the bottom of the shelf and the desktop, it'll be sweet like omnirax but WAY less expensive.

I don't smoke, but it's a bar, for God's sake. That's what your supposed to expect. It's a den of iniquity where people are going to indulge in all of the minor vices and sins denied to them during their mundane workdays. You can wreck your liver, ruin your hearing, get into a fight, and pick up an STD, but somehow smoking is unacceptable? Sheesh. We've turned into a nation of entitled whiners.

DIY is the way to go for this stuff (as well as a bunch of other problems I see on these pages). I've saved thousands of dollars DIYing simple stuff people seem to be willing to pay through the nose for. Fools. Congrats, and keep it up.

They tend to be sturdy, but if you load them too much, they can tip.

I have this one. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Studio-RTA-Mix-Station?sku=546551It's built like a tank, looks nice and rolls. Which is nice because it can sit against the wall, giving me more room, most of the time but I can easily pull it out into a proper mix position for serious mixing. Of course, I don't have a ton of gear so it might be limitation for someone who does. Lance

I got the desk. It's definitely worth $40 to have a desk like this while I figure out what my exact setup should be. I like it. With quite a bit of weight on the speaker and upper shelves, it is a little unbalanced. Fortunately, the weight of my TD-1 on the desktop more than compensates. How about that? A $1500 balance.

I am using one of the Studio RTA's from MF, but I'm planning on building something a bit more custom (and COMFORTABLE). Anyway, the temporary setup.... Thanks

I've got one of the Studio RTA desks too (scored for $50 on Craigslist). I've got articulated CRT monitor arms clamped to the left and right sides, one holding a control surface and the other holding a small monosynth. I'm surprised the MDF has held up as well as it has with how much I'm probably overloading it! (this pic is from before moving into our new place - I have a bit more room now so there's more 'wraparound' of gear I had in storage before, but the desk configuration is still similar for the time being).
