I've seen a couple things on the internet but to reduce cost does anyone know a way to mount the acoustic panels from the wall 3 inches or so?

Same idea with the ceiling maybe hanging an inch down?

Alot of this seems to hinge on how your panels are made.

If you frame them youself or if you dont use any framing and just use the plastic corners to keep a good looking square and cover it with cloth. what do you put on the backside of it to hang it?

Any ideas on both that you can get from like a home depot or something?

Thanks

Since I'm framing them in in wood, I'm going to be using "L" shaped brackets to mount them out from the wall and ceiling.

I guess thats a solution if you're framing.. What about trying to hide the brackets?

I guess you could try making the frames an inch deeper than the panels and put a couple 1"x2" cross boards across the back. Then maybe some heavy brackets that will slide over a "U" shaped bracket attached to the wall. I would definitely try to mount to a stud though. I'm a little skiddish about mounting wooden frames out form the wall with just drywall anchors. But that's just me.

Oh yeah, you mention going frameless with just plastic corners. Would you be able to drill screw hole in the plastic?

also, spray glue on 2 or 4 2x2 (or 2x4) styrofoam blocks on light absorbers and hang with picture wire. heavy ones - use wood screwed/glued to the frame.

If you made wood frames then just
1)hang it on the wall with wire
2)slip a piece of 4" pvc pipe between the panel and the wall.
The weight of the panel should keep it from moving and it will then be 4" off the wall.

I just shoot 2x4's into the wall and then mount panels to those. Secure and leaves an airspace behind the panels.

Ditto what JMP said. I used a 3/8 bit and drilled about 3/4 the way through the 2x4 and then attached with 3" screws(I had to go through 3 layers of rock).

I use a stainless steel wire (with heavy duty hooks) for the actual hanging - with an Extra HD hanger on the wall.

And the (for the standoffs) I use simple door stops (the cheap brass ones you can pick up at home despot) and just remove the rubber bumpers from them.

Rod,
GREAT idea on the door thing. Applaud

For the wall I like to use the ooks products. No big holes in the wall and holds around 90 pounds. www.ooks.com

I use hooks and wire also, but spaced them off the wall with old ADAT tapes. Weight held the tapes in place and at least I have some use for the tapes!

Nice, I'm gonna have to try the doorstops-as-standoffs idea. I've got mine hanging with picture rail hooks and picture wire from the crown molding / picture rail in the room, but should probably get the ones that aren't across corners out a few inches.
