I've listened to every clip in the sessions. I realize I'm going to have to try my own combinations of mics/pres, but do any of you get acoustic guitar sounds similar to the 10 second clips at the link? What guitar/mic/pre chain do you use for something like this?
I have a Taylor & a D-35 to work with, and for mics, a few 414b, c452eb, Lawson L47. I'm trying to narrow down a bunch of pres to try with this guitar/these mics to get something close to what's happening on the mp3 snips. Suggestions? http://www.geocities.com/gtrzoid27/ |

I'd go with the Lawson, personally speaking. Do you have access to any ribbon mics? I've had great results with acoustic guitar using a peluso r14 ribbon and Bang & Olufsen BM5 through a UA 610 or Portico 5012. I'd bet that Lawson will sound really fat and juicy on guitar.
Clip one sounds like a LDC, probably a tube mic. What kind of preamp it is, who knows. If you're asking about placement, try the Lawson about 18 inches in front of the guitar in cardioid pointed at the joint of the neck and body. If that's too boomy, move the mic toward the headstock a little. Too thin, move it toward the sound hole. What preamps do you have access to? I swear by the 5012 for a versitile, all around great pre. If you want something with a little more color, the UA 610 is pretty stellar. www.redroomva.com |

Oh. Light compression. That little RNC is a surprisingly good comp for the $. PSP vintage warmer is a great analog compression plugin and it's reasonably priced.
Clip 2 sounds noisy and not very good to my ears. www.redroomva.com |

I've gotten a similar sound with an ATM 4033 and an ADAT. I don't hear anything glistening there. It lacks sheen which tells me it wasn't done on a very high quality pre. Detail, clarity and range. are three attributes I would say are missing from this recording. The reverb on the 1st file and the flange on the 2nd file were the most impressive elements of all and were only o.k. in my personal opinion.
