Here is the thing though, I am running the speakers and headphones through my computer, and not the interface itself as I do not have an adapter for the headphones and my PC speakers go into a USB port. Is that wrong?

Not morally wrong, but you aren't going to get nearly as good a sound for mixing and monitoring until you listen through the interface. In fact, I usually disable every sound device but my recording interface when I am working. It cuts down on all kinds of OS/Sound device confusion. Compared to listening over your PC soundcard, you are going to love the way your interface sounds.

Thank you guys for helping. I do not believe the problem is with the interface though, because I remember that I experienced the same problem when I plugged the Mic directly into my integrated sound card about a month ago. Might there be something else that I am doing incorrectly?

Is there a special type of microphone cable that is supposed to be used? Like stereo vs mono? I am using a Standard 100 Monster microphone cable and it has three prongs to go into the Mic input.

An xlr (threeprongs) mic cable is the right cable. I'm wondering if your host(s) is recording stereo tracks by default or something. If so, it could be assigning your input (most likely imput one) to the left side and therefore only playing back the left side. Try recording some thing through input two and see if it just comes out the right side.

Thank you, I tried that, and they both came out of the left speaker. For now I have found a work-around by extracting the recorded audio as mono. So far, this is working. Thanks for the help. Hopefully this is the last road-bump...

Got any tips on mic placement?

Another weird thing: In the e-mu control panel, I click the drop down menu of sample rate to change it to 192. khz but as soon as I press record on adobe audition, it changes back to 48 khz.

Will try to get an adapter for headphones soon.

There are a ton of threads around here about mic placement so I'd start there. I've never tracked metal so I really wouldn't know where to start. I'm not sure you need that high of a sampling rate. I think it could hinder you more by taxing your resources that might be needed for other tasks. But, Assuming your version of audition supports sample rates above 48khz(you might check) check to make sure the project sample rate is set at the same sample rate you want to record. Some hosts will let you record multiple sample rates some won't and you have to specify when you start your project.

But, back to your monitoring issue, I was wondering if you tried using the software that came with your interface. If not you might try and see if you have the same problems. This is an issue that you want to sort out because it will end up being a big headache if you don't.

"...check to make sure the project sample rate is set at the same sample rate you want to record."

That was exactly what the problem was. You are smart! I only recently found out how to do this. As you can tell, I do not have much knowledge of this type of stuff. It is fun learning, though Smile

As planned, I got a headphone adapter, plugged it directly into the interface, and I get the same left speaker thing. Strange. I did not install any software that it came with and would prefer to spend more time on just something that I can work with for now. Even if it would be just to experiment, unfortunately my free time is getting a bit short.

The work-around is still proving helpful and it is acceptable for this one-time project.

I have spent a few hours getting a good mic position and have found one that I am happy with. Its stand is a pillow. Wow, thinking back at this experience, I have never done this before with an actual mic. The only mic that I have worked on "positioning," if you can call it that, was a headset-mic from Radio Shack. This is pretty exciting.

Anyway, I have recorded the rythem and lead guitars for one song. I'm sure it's nothing near spectacular, but I think it is exactly what I was looking for. Something for a demo. And it gets the guitar to my PC. So it's not exactly as out of my amp, but I am still enjoying the sound. Pretty cool. I'm happy with it!

Hi new boy here but old 'tronics tech.

One largely overlooked fact of jacking a "boutique" mic pre into the line in of the majority of interfaces is that you are still going thru' the mic pre! Alamost all AI's and mixers use a simple pad to implement line input.

This is not very obvious because, unlike mixers it is usually impossible to get info on the internal signal paths.

One solution is an interface like the Fast Track Pro which has inserts and allows access directly to the input of the converter.

Glad to have found you.
Dave.

That's kind of why I lean towards interfaces with additional line inputs(eg, preamps on 1/2 with just line inputs for 3/4 etc.) not just a combo jack or what have you. I'm srill pretty new here myself, but welcome.

Thank you! Now by joining me, do you mean you will be finishing something or going to Austin or what?

Thank you everyone for your help, especially LanceP and Wretchasketch. This was extremely difficult to do, but I am glad that it is finally out. It was worth it.
