the vocal sounded OK, honestly I was expecting a lot worse off axis stuff. A little EQ massage and you'd be pretty close. A little acoustic work and the eq and you'd be golden.
While I think the SE reflection filter probably does just fine, it's price would allow you to get some real treatments and not have to hassle with something that big and bulky, besides having something that proximate with only a inch or two of treatment on it...when I looked at them I thought they'd introduce as many issues as solve them..

that's my second favorite song of all time...everything else is tied for first though.

So Kel, what do you think would be the best way to treat my hallway? Put up a few panels of 703? Are there types of treatment that would work best here and absorb or reflect the right frequencies? Where should I start with the eq for the vox? Thanks you guys for all the help.

if you're going to continually record there, then I'd treat it. but maybe you'd want something that can stay and yet look decent enough.
try something like a couple packages of these:
http://www.gikacoustics.com/gik_242.html

one of these suspended overhead with picture wire would help too. You call that an Acoustic Cloud. Very important.

or some heavy lined curtains on a rod that can be pulled, along with some acoustic treatments. I bring a few pieces of 2x2x 3" Auralex when I go to cut vocals on location. ..that and some pushpins have saved a couple sessions in poor environments.

I don't know if you'd want to reflect anything at this point, meaning diffusion. Depends on the distance round trip from the source, to the walls and back wheyther diffusion might help. Perhaps Glenn@ GIK might offer more advice there. If you get proper bass traps they will handle the mids to high absorbtion you require.

Jazz have you tried to backing off the mic say abot 5 to 6 inches away and then use the compressor to get your voice up front

some mics just don't react right when you sing close up.Like my Studio Projects mics are designed to sing at 5 or 6 inches away.Other Mics like the Blueberry is just design for close up singing.Don't know about the 319?

JMP mentioned this earlier before you posted the clip. Are you singing through the right side of the mic? Try the other side and see what happens. It sounds to me like this is the problem or you have a faulty mic. I'd still follow Kel's advice for treatment if you're going to continue to record in the hallway. Sounds like you have another problem besides just that, though.

No my friend wasn't rapping into the right side of the mic but straight in on axis.

Jazz,

Just to be clear, I didn't mean the right hand side of the mic. I meant straight in to the front side of the capsule and not the backside of the capsule by mistake. My suggestion was to try talking/singing into the opposite side of the mic and see what happens. I've heard stories of the housing being ass backwards. Give it a try and see what you get.

Do you have a bigger space to record in - the biggest room you've got maybe? I bet that would help a bunch.

Some of it is because the way Oktava colors the sound, but it sounds like space or treatment issue. Little booths have that kind of vibe in them.
Get like 8 4"x2'x4' rigid fiberglass panels, that should take care of it.

Alright tbrugh, you won man. Slap I am feeling completely stupid. The mic WAS backwards. Usually when I look into a LDC the wire that connects to the diaphram is on the back side of it. But on this the wire is on the frontside, so I was singing into the back..stupid, stupid me. Alright enough self-hatred....I did exactly like you said and bingo...it actually sounded like a mic i'd like to keep Waytogo I am gonna contact Michael Joly and ask if that's the way it's supposed to be. Thanks for all the help guys.

Yes, that is correct - the wire attaches to the front side of the capsule. You'll also note that on the back side of the cap, the diaphragm is not gold coated. The model name & logo are on the front, switches on the back of the mic.

No prob, Jazz. It was either that or a broken mic.

I'm just glad you got it all figured out. Now you got that straight, the other advice you got regarding treatment, etc., is still great advice.
