I've been singing for 38 year's, playing guitar and bass for 34 years. My son is a musician as well. He currently plays drums, keys, guitar, bass and sax. I got interested in recording after being fascinated and frustrated by experiences in "real" studios. This is mostly for us, the bands we're in and our friends. I love to record. Right now I'm voluntarily under-employed, but would be very happy if people paid me money to record! The kid loves the outcome, but hates recording. We've built a basement practice room and are in the process of a sound controlled room. We've been building the gear from the basement up. Here's the list so far:

Mics

2 Sennheiser 845s; 2 Sennheiser 609 Silver; 1 Sennheiser 421u-5; 1 Sennheiser 421mkII; 1 Beyer Soundstar x1n; 1 Beyer m160; 1 Beyer m260; 1 Beyer m88GT; 1 Shure beta 58; 1 Shure beta 52; 1 Shure 58; 3 Shure 57; 1 SP C3; 2 SP B1; 2 Oktava mc012; 1 BLUE Baby Bottle; 1 Audix D6; 1 AT 3035; 1 mxl v69

Mixer/recorder

Korg D1600
A&H; Mix Wiz 16:2
Athlon 2700+ homemade computer (we built it, the software will come.)

Pres & Compression

4 channels M-Audio DMP3; 2 channels RNP; 1 channel Joe Meek VCQ6; 1 channel Great River 1NV;
1 channel RNC; 1 channel Joe Meek MC2

Guitars and amps

Guild D25; Alvarez-Yiari Silver Anniversary; PRS McCarty; Mexican strat modded beyond recognition; Yamaha Bass; Carr Slant 6v; Dr. Z Carmen Ghia; POD 2

Other stuff

Microkorg
RMV Concert series drum kit w/ various Zildjian symbols

Wish List

A-Designs 2 channel; 2 channels of API; Kurzweil Rumour; independent wealth.

My setup is in a 19' x 24' rec room in my basement.
I have 18 - 2' x 4' panels of Owens Corning 703 covered in fabric DIY.
My buddy and I built portable stands for 4 of the panels. The rest are mounted on walls or flown from the ceiling. I made a RF zone in the monitoring area behind speakers, overhead, and side walls.
We also made three 2' wide x 6' high bass traps, wood framed with 5" thick 703. Two of them are in the monitoring wall corners.
The floor is carpet and ceiling is dropped tile. I have 8' x 8' of plywood on the floor in the recording corner. The third bass trap is in this corner with a couple of 703 panels on the walls there and a couple overhead.
The other corner is the bar!Coffee

The rec room sounds pretty good, a fairly controlled sounding space.

Up the stairs to the living room/kitchen above is a nice live room that doesn't suffer from much flutter echo because of the complex shape.

I am not an engineer. I am just a guy with some gear, and a desire to make good music. I will probably be seeking some advice as we dig into our first real project. Bow
We will be recording our blues band (mostly original material).

It's all good.
I love this place and the things that I have learned here.

I just jumped back into writing songs and trying to record them about a year ago. Bought a used Roland 1680, and have since been trying to collect some decent inexpensive gear to record with. Don't have much yet, though. I was a drummer first, then learned to play guitar. I also picked up some keyboard (theory and composition) along the way.

Recording gear:
Roland VS1680
Art DI/O
Studio Projects VTB-1
AT3035
AKG C1000s (gift from my bro...thanks!)
SM 57

Celeron HP for running midi program (Cakewalk Pro 3.0)

Instruments
Martin D-1 (best cheap acoustic I could find after my Taylor 710 was stolen...ouch!)
Strat knock-off (Pacifica...not bad sounding, though I long for a real strat...my old one got stolen with the Taylor...double ouch!)
Ibanez Bass (just something inexpensive to lay down bass lines with. It does have active pickups.)
Roland TD-6 with Pintech heads.
M-Audio Radium-49 keyboard

Lusting after (i.e., next purchase)
Roland XV5080

I went and re-read my post here from Sept 2003 & figured it needed some updating. Since then I've bought a few mics & won a Great River ME-1NV (from here-thanks Dans!). I'm no longer in a band. I've also recorded one more demo & 2 full length cd's for local bands. I still operate out of a small room in my house and track bands at the warehouse where I work, or at their practice space. My goal now is to rent some warehouse space, build a few practice studios to help pay the rent, and set up an actual studio where I can record bands from start to finish. Myself and a friend are starting to work on some hip-hop beats & hope to put together a cd of our beats with local rappers doing the vocals. My current setup:

mxl v67 (2)
mxl 603s (2)
mxl v69me
sp b1
at 4033
behringer ecm8000 (2)
sm57 (5)
evPL95a
ev635a (2)
beta52
sm7
beyer m88tg
2 tape op ribbons (on the way)

seck 18x8x2 mixer
joemeek vc3q
dmp3
gr me1nv
tc electronics m300 fx
dbx 166 comp

delta1010
Vegas & Sound Forge
UAD-1 plugins
m-audio sp5b monitors
So far all my mixing is done in the box.

Numerous guitars acoustic & electric, a tenor banjo, jazz bass, Roland jv1010 synth, gk800rb bass head, Line6 Flextone guitar amp.

Thats about it.
Chris.

Cool Post...

I'm Rick, and I'm 46 years old..have been a musician professionally since age 14 when I played drums in a jazz trio throughout WI...both of the guys I worked with were in their 40's then, and both have suffered (tremendously)the long term effects of the lifestyle of clubs, drinking etc...hence my hatred for playing in smokey dives and my rather health conscious, martial arts and yogic lifestyle...

In 1980 at age 22 and after playing acoustic guitar for a short time, I released an album of origionals entitled Closing Time...and on the minor momentum of that event was able to make a start in the hard-to-connect-with college market...shortly thereafter I met my wife Jane, who is a hella flutist...we teamed up, and have been performing since...we also restore and fix old pianos for part of our living...we did a couple cassette albums in the 1980's while waiting for the world to blow up...the world didn't, and in 1994 we released our first CD entitled Spindrift and Wood...that would be our last "studio" recording where we paid for the time...

In 1994, just as our CD was released to (mixed)reviews in LA and NY, my wife's brother passed away suddenly just weeks after winnng a child custody battle. His 7 month old son was sent back to the birthmother who was a total monster (open court admission of sexual episodes with her older kids, etc)...Jane and I decided that the 7 month old was more important than the new CD, and pulled out all the stops to save this kid...we got legally focused and got him out of this hell-hole after a few months on a "temporary" order of the court... and then we fought the "system" for 7 more years with every kind of legal motion imaginable, trying to keep him from being returned (any attorneys reading this who have questions of how we obtained "standing" to do this are free to email me)...in Michigan where we live, before our case (and our well-crafted media coverage because oh hey it's what we do)a parent could actually admit a sexual episode with a child, keep their kids, and NOT FACE CRIMINAL PROSECUTION if the child was unable, or too young, to testify...a few trips to the capital, some loud public testimony, and a couple of hundred G's in legal fees, and today the "system" has some new and MUCH more rational rules...

Anyway, all this time while we were fighting in court (watching our financial standing dwindle) the little guy was in foster care with a GREAT family who, making a very long story short, adopted him two years ago when we finally got the termination of parental rights...he's doing very well today with his new permanent family...so, WE'RE FINALLY BACK TO OUR MUSICAL CAREER!!!

Over the past 10 years we've done maybe 15-20 shows yearly at colleges where we are a regular yearly event...the campuses are good for the bottom line...but we weren't able to concentrate on any touring to speak of because we were the advocates in the court for the cause to save "Adam"....

In 1999, in a fit of career frustration, I purchased the brand new and mighty VS1680, with the effects cards...and began trying to learn how in the hell those engineers got all those great sounds. While resolving our legal adventure I spent countless hours prying info out of helpful VS Planeteers and others in my quest to become even the most meager of engineers...in 2003 we began recording our new album (three tracks from which are at www.sytekdavies.com ) This past week we finished mastering the project.

The equipment we used was really simple stuff...my theory being that I really just need a pocketknife approach here in my little 10 by 12 foot studio...a few good Shure 57's and 58's, an AKG C414Buls, Roland's DR-something mic modeling mic, Furman Power Conditioner and Back-UPS Pro 420 save-my-ass power supply, an ART DPS, Sytek MPXAii mic pre, an ART TUBE MP, Sans Amp Guitar box, Oz Audio Q Mix headphone amp with AKG phones, Presonus ACP 22 compressor...simple tools...Event 20/20's and routing to every speaker in my house for references, Wechter guitars all over the place, Samick elec guitar, a cheapie bass, Yamaha Drums and Zildjian cymbals, flutes a-plenty, ...

We recorded and mixed the work here, but had it mastered offsite...just took the 1680 right to the mastering room and took analog outs...I could tweak in real time my 16 track automated mix per the engineer's instruction...it sounds pretty good to my ears, and we were WAY happier with our performance and the recording vibe since we were home in our sweats drinking tea and coffee when we recorded...

The past several years of career busting litigation didn't pass without some advances...we became connected with some heavies in the music industry through our high profile advocacy for children (the subject resonates throughout the entertainment industry)...many of those contacts are now very interested in our work...will it amount to anything? Who knows...we're just glad to be back to what we do!

Anyway, I'd like to take a moment to thank all of you for keeping the info flowing here at the Studio Forums...I'm new enough at this that every day I learn something here...and this place has downright saved my bottom on a few occasions...

Cheers!! Rick Davies Wink

No false pride here, I'm green in this biz.Quit my day job in 1992 to hack out a living as a single acoustic entertainer and never looked back.Ended up doing Buffett covers in Florida for the tourists, but I'm alright now.
I use your knowledge and experience gratefully to learn how to put some of my lifes experience into song.
Its going great!
If I could ever figure out how to do it, I'd post some samples to get feedback.
I tell you this humbly in case I ever get on my high horse and try to offer advice..... well maybe someday.

shortyprs, I am sorry to hear about your son. Its situations like this that make me embarased to be an American. A country/government as rich as ours can not take care of our children....but I digress.

My recording deal was posted on some introduction posts a while back, but in short:

I am lucky enough to be able to do music full time. i started as a performer but jumped to the other side of the glass in the late 80s. Its been my day job for about 14 years. I have been using computers for music since the mid 80s but I am still an analog guy at heart.

I have a small commercial studio in LA but I work in studios all over the world. (favorite studio in the world is Paradise Sound http://www.paradisesound.com/ ) I have been lucky enough to stumble into getting to work with a lot of really great musiciansover the years. I also run a recording education called Home Recording Boot Camp which teaches musicians about recording. I am a pretty in the trenches producer and I play on a lot of the records I producer and have started performing again for my own stuff.

Even though I have done hundreds of records and been through the ups and downs of the twisted music business, I still get giddy every time I get to walk into a studio to start making a record.

I'm an Indy Car race engineer and pit crew member. Graduated with a mechanical engineering degree in 1975. I've been playing guitar for 43 years, harmonica for 20 yrs, and bass for 3 months. Our team decided last October to do something productive while driving from track to track and came up with writing country songs (since we lead the life, it seemed natural). We've written 30 so far and have scratch recordings on all of them. Everything we know about recording has come from the internet forums and the help of DOT. Our equipment is: Boss BR1600, (2) SafeSound P1's, Great River 1NV, Hardy M1, ADK CE, ADK TL, AT4033, SM57 and AEA R84 mics.

Our instruments are top notch (vintage Martin, Fender, etc...) all equipment is better than our talent (even the BR1600).

Our goal is to sell a song to "Nashville" that we've written and recorded ourselves. We're a competitive bunch and don't listen to the naysayers.

Thanks to all of you who have contributed to helping us get as far as we've come in 3 months.

BTW how do you reference quotes in this forum -(I'm referring to the quote above.)

Wow, Rick--you have the patience of a saint...and the temperament of a bulldog! Good for you fighting the system and coming out on top!

Here goes my tale...

Started formal drum training at age five, was playing in drum and bugle corps at age nine. My first parade was a rainy day and my snare drum head turned to jello. Calfskin. That gives you an idea how old I am! Started playing professional gigs at 12 (Mom used to have to bring me to the honky tonks and strip clubs!) and went to a very progressive high school in Norwich, CT. Instead of college, I went on the road and somehow ended up in Springfield, MO where I played with several working bands before landing a house gig with a top-40 band that played six nights a week, 47 weeks a year. I played with that group for over ten years. It was pretty incredible to make a living as a musician and not have to sleep in a hotel or on a bus for a change. I eventually ended up playing with the Lawrence Welk Orchestra in Branson, MO--quite a departure from what I had been doing but I did get to play a lot of big band charts with a 20 piece ochestra--the drummer is definitely in the hot seat on a gig like that! The lessons learned were invaluable. I then started working for Tony Orlando doing the casino and performing art center circuit for five years. All the while I was doing a variety of session work and wondering if I could ever have my own studio to provide drum and percussion tracks for people who were fed up with the limitations of drum machines and loops. The technology finally made my vision a reality and three years ago I bought an Akai DPS24 and started the never ending quest for microphones to complete the package. It was another year before I decided to quit the lucrative road gig and start my own business. I eventually added some good front end (Focusrite Red series pre-amps) to the arsenal and moved into a bigger room in the house. Hey, the more sq. footage, the more of a deduction I can take! I bought a dedicated PC and finally upgraded the monitors in the last year or so and now it's rockin' in here! I'm currently producing tracks for some clients (HUGE talent pool to draw from both locally and on-line)and enjoying doing the majority of my work right here at home.

If anyone here ever needs real drums or percussion on your material, feel free to contact me for information. I've done some work for a couple of people here at Studio Forums--namely Popmann and MudBean--with a minimum of hassle and a large degree of success. I use a server to facilitate large file transfers and can sometimes turn a tune around in a day or less. See my website for some examples and let me know if I can ever help out with your next project. When you figure in what you would have to pay a drummer to come into your studio--not an altogether pleasant thought, eh? ;>)--and the set-up time involved, I am a real bargain! End of shameless advert...

Here's a list of some of my gear:

Noble & Cooley kit (17x22, 8x8, 8x10, 9x12, 12x14, 14x16)
1943 Slingerland Radio King kit (14x28, 9x13, 10x14 w/original calfskin heads!)
1961 Gretsch kit (14x20, 8x12, 14x14)
Zildjian K and A Custom cymbals
Noble & Cooley 5x14 SS Classic snare (solid maple shell)
Noble & Cooley 4.5x14 Alloy Classic snare (thin aluminum shell that barks!)
'43 Slingerland Radio King 7.5x14 snare (solid maple shell--very vintage sound!)
'61 Gretsch 5x14 snare (chrome over brass)
AKG D112
AKG C 451 B (matched pair)
Shure Beta 57
Shure SM 57
Sennheiser 604 (4)
AT 3035 (2)
Akai DPS24
Focusrite Red 1
Sony Vaio 2.4 P4 running Nuendo 2.0 and Wavelab
Waves Native Gold Bundle
Event 20/20 bas V2 monitors
Yamaha MSP5 nearfields
Alesis XT-20 (synced to DPS24 for sample accurate transfers)

Happy recording-

Yes, Pete rocks! And, he's a genuinely nice guy, too!! He's only done one tune for me so far, but I plan on having him play on them all ... I gave him a scratch acoustic guitar, bass and vocal MP3, with hardly any specific drum part instructions - and the part he played was exactly what I wanted, even though I had never heard it! Amaaaazing.

Hey, Pete - so, I've mixed the drum tracks for that first tune like 20 times, and I'm afraid to commit to a submix now that this is for real, Eek so I'm taking my tax refund and investing in an Alesis HD24 ... woo hoo! Thanks for giving me a reason to take the plunge!

BTW, dudes & dudettes, I've posted my life story in several different threads in the last few months since I discovered y'all, thanks to the piece in TapeOp on Dan's Listening Sessions. Here, again, in a nutshell: Grew up playing trumpet in school, took up acoustic guitar in college ('77), became bass player in 1990 ... always intrigued by the science & art of audio recording, from cassette dub to cassette as a kid, to boombox tapes of drum corps shows, to portastudio in the rehearsal room ... when we bought our house out here in the desert, I made sure I'd have my own playroom, the extra bedroom next to the garage - currently working up the gumption to cut that hole in the wall to install the interface panels I've been assembling so that I can use the garage as a tracking room ... here's my pile of 'vintage' (old) and low-end crap:

Working on recording my tunes with my wife, Tina (Bean) of the golden pipes, who's a better producer than I. If my friends and associates express a desire to record, maybe I'll have them over, too, but I'm not planning on entertaining any scuzzy musician strangers at my house, 'cause they're all stinky criminals! I put my ADAT and the ADA8000 in a road case, so if they want me to record them, I'll go wherever they are ...

I'd like to say "Muchas Gracias" to all my new friends at Studio Forums - you folks all ROCK!!! I've already learned a shitload of cool stuff, with more to come, I'm sure. I hope, in my own amateur way, I can contribute a little on my own part.

I can't believe I didn't see this until now...

Ok, I'm Arthur De Kegel. I am a free-lance engineer/mixer and producer and live in Belgium.
I started out like many of you guys on a Tascam porta-potty and stuff... Recording anything I could get my hands on.

Today I work with a neat ProTools HD3 Accel setup, with a ProControl as control surface and a couple of 192s as interfaces. All on a Mac G4, soon to be replaced by a G5.
I have collected a shitload of mics over the years, like e.g. Neumann m149, U87, TLM103, Coles 4038, Sennheiser MD421, K6/ME64, 409, 609, 602 etc. etc...

I was lucky to find a mentor, the #1 producer/engineer in Belgium. He taught me the ins and outs and took me on a wonderful trip the last couple of years.
I was really lucky and got to record and master about 4 times at Abbey Road Studios in London, tracking the London Symphony and others.
The subsequent albums went Platinum and Gold.
I also was able to mix at David Gilmour's private studio Astoria, located on a house boat on the Thames in Surrey, UK.
There's also my own band. We had a number one chart hit last year.
Also, I started a music production company and publishing company together with my best friend in the US. My family applied for immigration and we are awaiting our green card.
Don't worry peops from the US, I'm not coming to collect welfare Big Grin If I were to do that, I'd be better of here in Belgium Big Grin Big Grin

The last quarter was filled with bad luck for me though. I had 4 very serious surgeries and am still reconvalescing (sp?) after 4 months.

BTW, the avatar you see is me in the control room of abbey road studio B, after a long and wearing session at about 2 AM. It is the same studio The Beatles recorded all their great stuff in. There is even still the same piano that was used for let it be and lady madonna... crazy stuff.

OK, that's about enough bragging from me Big Grin Big Grin

Nice to meet all you peeps here.

Cheers
Arthur

Hey, Mud--Glad to hear you're taking the plunge and adding some tracks to the setup! That will make things much easier for you...and me! Looking forward to the next tune.

Arthur--Very cool! As close as I got to Abbey Road was the LSO truck parked outside when I was there a few years ago. They had a session going on with Sir Paul! Man, if those walls could talk, huh?

Nice to see so many talented people here. What a great community. Well, I'm off to do percussion overdubs for Jim Stafford. Anybody remember him?

Pete
