How did you guys do the mesh removal in the headbasket? Anyone come up with a way to do it neatly without cutting most of it out and leaving bits glued on?

Oh...it's not glue...it's solder. And you need a HOT iron and some wick to get rid of it!!

That's where the nightmare begins.

One thing that I have done, to get my 1050 to sound more U47 like, was replacing C4-1000pf(.001uf)/630v with a WIMA .01uf(10,000pf)/250v cap, which is what the U47 uses on the grid. This adds alot of low end fullness that was missing, even with the CEK-47 capsule.

I'll keep you posted on the R10 change once I get them. I'm told it will help tame the brightness that's happening.

Here's that pic of the replaced head basket screen I did for the 460. It' a less fine mesh (the same size as you'd see in a 1050) and it's dome is about 2X higher than it is stock. The CEK12 capsule is REALLY close to the top of the dome with the stock head basket.

Michael,

Here's a link to the WIMA .01uf/250v that I used. It's amazing the difference it makes.

Man, that basket came out great!!! So is the capsule more centered now?

I ordered the resistors today, so I'll report when I get them in.

Cool. Thanks. I'll check out the WIMA .01 and see how it goes. The capsule is in a way better spot now.

I think I may take a risk and cut down the mount about 1/8 inch. Sort of just cut the rubber down and epoxy the metal top part back on....or maybe I won't! The head basket was a bit of a pain but now I know how to do it so it should be pretty easy is I do another one for the 460 I've got. If you ever try doing let me know and I'll talk you through it I definitely made some early mistakes and had to do 2 times before I get it right.

I got the screening from smallparts.com, it's a great site. They've got lot's of tweaky stuff on there!

Great job on the headbasket. Definitely gets closer to a C12 look, which has plenty of room at the top. I wonder if it would be possible to remove the metal bar that runs in front of and behind the capsule? The C12 and ELAM mics didn't have that piece. It really seems like it would block the sound entering the mic head.

I've removed the bars on a 1050. You have to be careful but it was pretty easy wit a dremmel with metal cutting wheel. It makes the mic a little more delicate though.

You would have to put in a thicker grill material than stock to do it with the Apex 460

Got a question. What cap are you guys putting in for C1/C2...1uf 200-250v I suppose? Particularly for a 460, I'v put Panasonics in the 1050 the ones I use are way too big for a 460.

Thanks,

Michael

I've got Black Gates in my 1050. Way too big for the 460. I think my 460 still has the stock caps here. I'm no help I guess.

This may be a bit off topic, but does the 460 (tcm1150) schockmount look just like the tcm1050, but the part on the bottom where you screw it in has a different, smaller diameter?

(The relates to me trying to find a shockmount. The ebay store I bought mine from sent me what I think is a 1150 shockmount instead of a 1050.)

...it's different. Smaller diameter and not the screw-in type.

I bought one of these crazy things...super pricey but kind of cool.

....btw...no other thoughts on a film capacitor for C1/C2 for an Apex 460??

What would a part number for those be? I got a 1.5uf miniture panasonic from digikey....they don't seem to have a 1uf....maybe I'm searching for the wrong thing. Perhaps another vendor. Let me know where you got them from if you can....TIA

Hmm, you may be right. What is the voltage at C1 and C2?

O.K. I put the 100M resistor in place of the 1KM at R10 in my 1050. This brings out all the mids more, especially the lower mids. This would definitely fill out a thin voice.

One thing I discovered today was that, while the layouts are the same for the Apex and Nady power supplies, there are different values one some parts. For instance, the Apex has 2 1000uf caps at C9 and C10, where the Nady has 10,000uf caps in the same spots!!! Also, the Apex has a 1uf electro at C7, where the Nady has a 2200pf mylar. I have mentioned earlier that the zener diodes in the Apex are 1N4761's in both D5 and D6, but the Nady has one 1N4762 and one 1N4764, respectively.

I know that changing the zeners makes a big difference, but what about the others? Anyone have a clue?

Hey MPCNYC,

Here's what I used for C1 and C2 (though not in a 460): They're panasonic metal polyester. 1.0uF/250V
The digikey part number is P10979-ND.
They might still be too big, but if I remember correctly, at one point you gave me a part number for the panasonics films you were using in your 1050, and I looked it up and then actually found this one, which is smaller. Anyway, check the size on the site though. Good Luck.
