Gotham Audio cables are not expensive. I don't remember exact numbers, but Lew said finished mic cables will run anywhere from around $25.00 - $35.00. In that neighborhood.

Now you're speaking my language Big Grin.

Now, forget mic stands that actually work, insane decca tree booms, crazy $4k mics, nice cheap cables...I just wish I had a couple thousand for a plane flight, a hotel room, and a ticket to the show. You guys are gonna have a good time, and I'm gonna have a good time listening to the finished product. Enjoy yourselves.

I'm utterly baffled at the general opinion regarding smoking. I don't smoke, but it's a bar, for God's sake. That's what your supposed to expect. It's a den of iniquity where people are going to indulge in all of the minor vices and sins denied to them during their mundane workdays. You can wreck your liver, ruin your hearing, get into a fight, and pick up an STD, but somehow smoking is unacceptable? Sheesh. We've turned into a nation of entitled whiners.

Parking Karma

Somehow I have amazing "parking karma". I always find an open spot right near the front door.

So, when I got to NAMM in Anaheim, CA, - on Saturday, Jan 21st - after flying all the way across the US and driving straight from LAX - I was baffled that all the lots were full. There was no place to park anywhere. I drove around for about 20 minutes - even asked people walking on the street towards NAMM. They all just shrugged. Then I called Peter Montessi to see if he had any advice. He just laughed. At one point I was considering checking into a hotel just to have a parking place.

Almost a half mile from NAMM I spot an Enterprise car rental place. Since my car was an Enterprise rental, I pulled in and asked the guy if there was any way I could park my car in there. He said they had returns coming in, but he gave me another idea. He said the Hilton - right next to NAMM - was an Enterprise return center, and that if I went to the self-park garage, the attendents would have to let me in.

Long story short: I drove right up to NAMM, pulled into the Hilton garage and parked on the 4th level. Walked down a flight of stairs - and was literally less than 100 feet from the entrance. : )

Parking Karma revisited

After NAMM was over I went to hang out with an old friend for a few days. There was an open parking spot right in front of his house. When he came out to meet me, he commented on what a great parking spot I got.

Wednesday morning was street cleaning day. I didn't know about moving my car. Being a scuff-law really gave me a sense of adventure on my LA trip.

NAMM

I've never really been a "trade show" kinda guy. I don't like crowds, and as a whole, I've never actually been crazy about musicians. But if I've got to go to a show, I'm much more of an AES type.

It's funny to see these wanna-be bands traveling together in packs. Looking over and seeing these guys who look like Korn - except it's not Korn. Outside there was a big sign saying that NAMM was private and not open to the public. But except for the exhibitors - it all looked pretty "public" to me.

As for pics, if you've seen a few pics from a NAMM show, you've seen them all.

This is a good shot of the fucking zoo that is NAMM.

I didn't take my camera on Saturday. Walked around. Said hi to a few friends I've known for years. Had dinner and various beers with Larry Villella and JP Gerard of ADK. I finally checked into the Park Vue Inn - where I stayed all through Sunday and left Monday morning for LA. Didn't even go back to NAMM. And lucky for me, because a lot of the folks who put in serious NAMM time were sick as dogs for most of that next week.

Ask and ye shall receive

When I got to NAMM on Saturday, I went through all the halls looking for a lanyard. No luck anywhere. After a while I was getting slutty and looking for anything. I was past thinking I had to have something from a "cool" company. In fact, I got to thinking that maybe having a Behringer lanyard would be slick - but had no luck there either.

Later that night, Larry Villella and JP Gerard of ADK and I were out sorta late pounding a few beers, when this chick from Steinway starts chatting us up. I somehow brought up that I'd been looking all over for a Behringer lanyard. Next thing I know - as I'm looking down at my beer - this bright yellow streak flashes out of the corner of my eye and then lands on the table in front of me. Score!
